The object of getting into entrepreneurship is because you want to be your own boss. You’re tired of someone telling you to do such ridiculous things, it seems they have no common sense. When you open your own business, you’re the boss. You are the one making the ridiculous decisions and you’re the one who has to generate sales. The art of generating sales is not as easy as some would want you to believe. I know you see all these ads that tell you they know the magic to generating sales. They have a tried and true formula to getting sales. Folks, don’t believe it. Do you think if it were so tried and true they would be targeting you? No, they’d be sharing it with their own families or keeping it for themselves.
Unique Things Sales
Once again, we disagree. I feel advertisement is the best way to generate sales. You send out emailings, make a television commercial early in the morning or late at night to offset the cost, buy email addresses, give out flyers, have an open house where people can come meet you and see your products. It might be nice to have snacks, go to a flea market or any outdoor fair, and last but not least, hire a website manager to create and drive traffic to your website. To me, all these approaches generate sales. I know some people might not view all the options above as advertisement, but I view advertisement as any way you can generate cash or at least interest in your business. My spouse’s answer to generating was to stay up half the night and keep changing the website. I do have to give her credit: she didn’t know anything about building a website but she self-taught herself everything that was needed to create a working website. The problem was, she just kept buying and buying and buying products. There was no outreach to other people beyond the people at her job. She had a false sense of sales because she was selling a few items at her job. I tried to explain that you really can’t gauge how well your business is doing because selling to family or coworkers should be a given. Don’t get me wrong: maybe it’s not a given, since no one in my family bought anything. I’m just saying, it’s easier to sell to people you know. Remember all those Girl Scout Cookies you bought even though you were on a diet? Well, it’s payback time for their parents. Yes, the sales she made did generate cash and yes, she did get a few repeaters, but this only made her think that spending money or advertising wasn’t necessary. The biggest sales generator we have now is social media. It is unbelievable what you can do with a social media following. The problem we have with social media is that what we sell doesn’t appeal to everyone. Our demographic would be geeks and people who like different things. Our target has to have money to spend on extravagances. The people we know are just like us, trying to make a dollar into ten dollars. Problem? Yes, which means we need outside advertising to reach people who can afford what we sell. No, everything we sell is not a lot but it is extra when people are watching their funds. I understand if you have headphones that you don’t want to buy another pair, but what I would like is if those headphones break, that you buy from Unique Things. We disagreed on this for a while and I just got so tired. I quit. I mean really quit. I was done. Bye-bye, Unique Things, don’t ask me no questions. And then? You’ll have to wait until next week.
