Stacking Money in 2019

It’s a new year, and I want to help you with one of your resolutions. Every year, we resolve to eat right, exercise, and save money. This blog is to help you solve one of those problems-actually, the only one I’m capable of; the other two are on you. These days, most things are expensive; you have to put two or three paychecks together if you want to pay cash. It’s not easy by any means. One thing you have to realize is that you are not alone in trying to make ends meet. You want to save money, but how? Don’t let fear keep you from increasing your financial worth. How many times do you discuss your financial situation with a family member or friend, (except in generic terms)., or make a joke about it. Like “(I can see the lint in my pocket, I’m so broke”). There are many like-minded people out there just like you who want to save but have limited funds, and know nothing of what’s out there that can help them change their financial situation.

Stocks and Stilettos

One group that’s out there helping women to learn all about investing is Cassandra Cummings’ Stock and Stilettos group. Cummings is a motivator and leader who gives women a platform to learn about investing and moving forward in their quest to be financially stable.

What caught my eye first about Stock and Stilettos was that name, which I found is exactly what this group is about women learning about investing financially in various ways. This is a very sought-after group with women from all backgrounds coming together to get educated and share about how to become financially fit. Your thinking can be anywhere from “I don’t know anything about investing” to “I want to expand my stock portfolio”; Stocks and Stilettos has something for you. Cummings is a hands-on leader who shares knowledge via FaceTime and brings in guest speakers to spread their knowledge to the women. There are classes and clubs that not only share knowledge, but help to form life-long friendships among the women. Stocks and Stilettos provides many ways to get beyond the “I don’t know anything about investing” mindset to you being confident in your investment choices.

Beginners have no need to feel intimated. I just took a candlestick chart class that was for beginners who wanted to start to learn this type of chart. There are a lot of charts that can be used in investing. I found the class informative and not so involved that I felt lost.

This is a group every woman should consider joining to increase your financial knowledge and to be able to replace the lint in your pocket with green bills. If you’ve ever wondered about the stock market, options, cryptocurrency, or any financial vehicle, all it takes is going on Facebook and asking to join, and you will be on your way to bettering your financial situation.

                                                 Acorns

I call Acorns the-no-think about way of saving because you really just forget about it. It’s so easy, you won’t realize you’re saving.  This is how’s it done every time you buy something, Acorns rounds up the change and invests automatically. For example, if you buy a shirt for $12.50, Acorns rounds up to $13.00, invests the $0.50 automatically.  I know right at this moment you’re saying, “She’s crazy to think I’m going to put my hard-earned money in the stock market when it’s tanking every-day.” This is where the no-think part of Acorns comes in. You just spend, and they will do the investing for you. I’m not saying that you should just give someone your money and never look at it again (no way), but what I am saying is you don’t have to go out and buy Invest Dummies books to save through Acorns. There is an app and questions to see what your goals are. I’ve used Acorns since it started, and have never had a problem with customer service or withdrawing or adding funds. Saving will come no easier than with Acorns. There is a fee associated with Acorns.

                                            Crowdfunding

When you start seeing you bank account inch up, you’ll want to invest in all kinds of things (options and real estate, to name a few). I became interested in land through the crowdfunding site Kickstarter. There was a campaign a company named Acres was running to purchase land by paying for it monthly. When you finish paying, you get a clean title to the land.

While I’m mentioning Kickstarter, are you creative? I mean, can you sing, make something, or improve something out there? Then crowdfunding maybe the way for you to increase your financial worth. There are two crowdfunding sites that I am familiar with: Kickstarter and Indiegogo. I’m sure there are a lot that I don’t know about, but these are the two I have used personally. Crowdfunding is basically where you have an idea and you get people to believe in your dream by funding it. Here’s were the making money part comes in: you can sell your products to places like Amazon or Walmart, or through your own website.I have not created any campaigns however, I have helped fund dreams through crowdfunding such as Acres. I have a blog where I talk about the sites, called Uniquethings.blog.

                                            Fundrise

Real estate can be a great investment for your future. Fundrise is a real estate company that invests in property. They loan money and invest in up-and-coming communities in many states. What I like about Fundrise are the different types of homes and communities that I am invested in, as well as the communication they provide about new properties they are investing in. They provide you very-easy- to- understand information and descriptions about the different properties. There is an investment cost of $1,000 to join. The other thing I want to mention about Fundrise is that you set up a monetary goal and  pay down on that goal on a monthly basis. For example, if you wanted $20,000 within five years, you would pay $233 a month. I’m sure there are other ways to invest in real estate out there, and as your portfolio grows, consider adding real estate to your portfolio.

I just became aware of two websites that allow you to invest in real estate: Buildingbits.com and The Tulsa Real Estate Fund. I know very little of these two companies; Building Bits lets you choose the property that you want to invest in, and the Tulsa Real Estate Fund is African American- owned. Please do your research or talk to someone with experience before investing.

                                                  eBay

eBay and other sites where you resell items for profit are another way to increase your finances. My spouse does this, and it can be profitable, but you have to be careful of eBay fees. I tell people I’ll never look at a clearance rack the same. Why? Because every item on a clearance rack can potentially be resold for profit. It is not only items from your closet that can be resold; people actually go to Goodwill, thrift shops, and clearance racks to get the items they resell. Check it out on YouTube; this is a growing business for housewives. Did you know that Goodwill has a website that resellers use to increase their inventory? How times have changed.

                                            Robinhood

The website Robinhood is a very popular way to invest with minimal funds. Robinhood has a commission-free investing platform, which gives you more money to invest.

Robinhood offers such investment vehicles as stock, options and cryptocurrency, and offers information about the companies you are interested in. I personally like the ease of use, and being able to see what analysts are saying about a company before I invest. When you’re looking for an easy way to invest, give Robinhood some consideration.

                                         Stockpile

Stockpile is another web-based way to invest, like Robinhood. There were things I liked about investing in Stockpile, and things I did not like as much. What I liked about Stockpile is that you can invest in factual shares, but what I didn’t like was that your trades aren’t, completed until the end of the day. Here’s an example of factual investing with Stockpile: Let’s say you want to invest in Amazon, but don’t have $1,500 for a whole share. You can go to stockpile and buy a factional share of Amazon for, say, $25, and you can own a piece of Amazon. Stockpile is great for the person on limited funds who wants to own a piece of a company that would otherwise be out of their reach financially. Stockpile puts big companies such as Netflix and Amazon within your reach.

                                   Cryptocurrencies

I’m only mentioning cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum  because there is so much hope that crypto will do for us what the dollar does, which is to buy whatever you want. You will see many opinions as to whether cryptocurrency is worth investing in, since it’s very volatile at this time. Crypto is definitely something you should do your homework on or take a class on with a group such as Stocks and Stilettos.

No matter whether you’re new to investing or not, you should do your own research. Read books and ask questions. Don’t follow the hype unless you’ve come to the same conclusion. You should join groups such as Stocks and Stilettos and Robinhood, which also has a Facebook group. Everyone has their own situation, and my situation certainly won’t be yours, so be informed in your investments. Don’t spend the grocery money to invest, and learn to have patience, because nothing happens overnight. Happy Investing in 2019!

Unique Things-Ebay Selling

Glance Clock

Bluetooth Backpack

Unique Things store has relocated to Florida and it’s been insane trying to get Unique Things set up in a new state. It is hard enough moving with your personal items, but when you have to pack up and move products it can be overwhelming. We are both retired and now the business can get more attention. I have decided that writing is what I want to do and K would have full control of the business. She sort of took it over anyway. There are some people who can sit still and others who need to be occupied. For one thing it gives them something to do and the other, it keeps them out of trouble. I can sit still but she needs to be occupied. She made an office in the garage and me and GG and Mason had the rest of the house. She gets up like she was going to work and I might not see her until bedtime. Hmm, what was she doing? One day, while I getting something to drink, I heard ‘Ka-Ching’ – could that be the sound of money? I didn’t think so because the Unique Things website had just been put back online, and there had been no traffic so far…I decided it was time to become Sherlock Holmes. I would go to the garage under the pretext of needing to know something, it didn’t matter, I just wanted to look around. There were boxes of products, free-standing shelves with products, boxes and crates with bubble wrap and other shipping items. She had setup Stamps.com for mailing. Where had I been when all this was taking place? I couldn’t believe it.
Another Ka-Ching sound came from the computer. Of course, I had to ask “What’s that?”
 She said “We’re making money.”
“How?” I asked. I knew she was enjoying this, me asking her about making money.
She said that she’d been selling on Ebay some of the things from Unique Things along with Funkos and other items. Ebay selling was doing what having a website couldn’t do. She had poured so much of herself into the Unique Things website that I worried she’d exhaust herself trying to make it a success. She tried Facebook ads but didn’t like the fact that there is not a person to contact and you had to do everything through email. K used google adwords, but nothing seemed to drive enough traffic to the website. The traffic wasn’t consistent either – we could have 10 people one day and nothing for the next week.

K selling on Ebay happened because I didn’t want Funkos on the Unique Things website. I just didn’t feel they were unique enough for Unique Things. I have come to learn that Funkos are popular collectables that people pay a lot of money for. I just don’t see it.

Funko

Anyway, she decided to put them on Ebay along with some toys. She had bought a pallet of mystery toys cheaply. The toys were all in good condition and sellable. You just didn’t know what toys you were getting. The amount of toys you got could provide a nice little profit if sold. I really didn’t pay too much attention to her Ebay selling because the Unique Things website was frustrating me. I could not understand why the products weren’t running off the shelves. The products on the Unique Things website were unique. The items were not in retail stores yet. What was the problem? I thought it was price but K and I could never agree what a fair and profitable price should be. I thought the price needed to be lower than it was going to sell for retail. K felt the price should be the same as the retail price. I decided to stay in my lane, writing. She made the price the same as retail. She wanted to try different ideas to try and get a consistent flow of traffic to the Unique Things website and one of those things was taking some of the items on Unique Things and putting them on Ebay. When she did it I didn’t say anything. What could I say? By the time we moved to Florida I had given up hope on Unique Things. I couldn’t understand why other people didn’t feel that wow factor when they saw our products. I didn’t care what she did with the products at this point. One day I was standing in the kitchen and I heard the Ka-Ching sound. I thought another was sold. She does quite well selling the Funkos on Ebay. She has suppliers and everything. Anyway, she starts yelling “We sold a backpack.” I couldn’t believe it after almost two years of them being on the Unique Things website and nothing, and she puts it on Ebay in less than 2 weeks it was sold. You know, I was interested in Ebay now. I know you want to know how she does it but I’m not saying in this blog, so come back and find out her techniques and strategies for selling on Ebay. Have a great day.

Unique Things Newsletter Issue 2 February 2018

Being Different Is Okay

Unique Things and Valentine’s Day can go hand-in-hand. Valentine’s Day is all about showing love. We love our parents, sister, brother and so on. We have somehow gotten away from that meaning in Valentine’s Day, and it’s become a holiday where we only show love to our spouse or significant other. Well, I want to put an end to that, because with kids getting bullied to the point of hurting themselves or others, there seems to be a disconnect somewhere understanding love. Valentine’s Day should be a time when we show love to everyone. It is a holiday when we should say it’s okay to be Unique. Uniqueness is a quality that each of us possess because there are no two people who are the same. There will always be differences somewhere. We here at Unique Things don’t just want to sell you things, but we want all of you to become family members. We want your children to be able to come to our website and in the contacts, go to comments, and write out what’s bothering them.

You have a recipe you want to share, then put it out there for others to try. Unique Things wants to be there for you. We want to have a relationship with our customers that is Unique. I know it’s hard to open up to other people, but isn’t it time that you embrace your uniqueness and put it out there for help and validation? I just hope one person – an adult or a young person – reaches out to Unique Things. The hardest thing will be putting the first words on the message and then letting all others follow. Don’t think; just do. I know some might ask what does this have to do with selling items online.

When I was young, I would go to the corner store for candy, sodas, chips and other snacks. The owner of the store got to know me, as well as all of the kids that came in. He would always ask “How’s school?” How’s your mother, father, sister, and brother by name. If you came in looking sad, he’d try to make you smile or take the time to try to get you to tell him what was going on. If there was a fight, he broke it up and had the fighters makeup. When we needed snacks, guess where we went? Yep, always to him to spend our money. This is why Unique Things is not like other places you shop. We want a relationship with you, so when you need a gift, you won’t want to go anywhere else but to Unique Things for that Unique gift. We want you to come to our website take a look around, think of all of the unique people in your life, and get them a unique gift.

Checkout a few items that we thought you would like for this Valentine’s Day. You can now order right from this page with PayPal. If you want to say something in the comments, go to our website at uniquethingsonline.com. I promise, I’ll reply, so let me hear from you. I hope you enjoyed this newsletter. You can go to retirementanddogs.blog to read about me being retired with a crazy dog!

Unique Things 2018

I would first like to thank all of the Unique People who have taken this journey with us. It hasn’t always been pretty, but somehow we’ve gotten this far. I can say this far, because sales have picked up and K is now thinking of starting a side hustle, to side hustle, to side hustle, I want to reiterate a few things I think are worth repeating.

It is not easy doing business with your spouse, especially if the communication isn’t there. You have to be on the same page, or get there. K and I have finally gotten on the same page. There must be a lot of listening and actually hearing what the other person is saying. We sometimes listen, but there is no hearing. I mean you have to understand what someone is saying. I think that research is important, so that you have an idea of what’s involved. We didn’t do the research, and it probably cost a lot of money and time that was unnecessary. You should know who you are targeting, so that your website, blog, or advertising will reach that group. At one time, we were so busy trying to make a sale that we forgot what Unique Things was really about. It would be nice to have a mission statement to look at daily to stay on point. I want you to realize that there will be disagreements when doing business with your spouse. It is okay to have disagreements, but just don’t let it become part of your relationship. When you find that a disagreement is carrying on into your relationship, you should step away from the business and plan a date night or some alone time. We didn’t do either, but it would have been so much easier if we had. I will say that advertising, to me, is the most important part of a business. K was buying, buying, and buying, and while we now have a lot of products, it does us no good if no one knows Unique Things exists. There are all types of advertising out there to spend money on, but if money is limited, choose carefully. We had web designers who said that, yes, they could do what we wanted, but in the end, there was nothing of our vision. They wanted the money, but also wanted to do what was easiest for them. Don’t ever feel that you can’t say no or fire someone who is not giving you what you want. We lost a lot of money not speaking up for ourselves soon enough, because people will have you believe they’ve spend hours on your site when the reality was they finished it in a couple of hours. Speak up for yourself and your business. The avenues that worked best for us were the flea market (after we understood how it worked), eBay, Ad Words, and of course, blogging. It doesn’t matter if you are just starting a business with your spouse or best friend – it takes time. Our expectations were high because we felt that Unique Things sold items that you didn’t see everywhere, therefore, we only had to put it out there and people would be knocking down our door. Well, we were so wrong. Unique Things does sell different items, but enticing people to buy our different items has been a challenge. The business is finally turning around after a year of learning. The American dream is entrepreneurship, but there’s no guarantee that every business will make it. You have to keep putting yourself out there, so people keep seeing you. It’s not easy to get people to spend money on a new business because of credit card fraud and people who misrepresent themselves. It’s a process of trying this and that to see what sticks. It’s 2018, and what I see for Unique Things is a store where people can actually come in and see how our products work. The best I can do right now is videos to show how our products work. I will keep you up to date on any significant occurrences at Unique Things. Again thank you

The first product I want to show you is a backpack with a hard shell speaker. I hope you come over to Uniquethingsonline.com when you need that special gift for a unique person in your life.

Holidays and Family

Glance Clock-not your ordinary clock. Get your notifications while glancing at the time. Uniquethingsonline.com

The holidays have come and gone, and for Unique Things, we were hoping for big money. Did that happen? Nope. While we did make some money, it wasn’t the hundreds on hundreds of dollars that we thought we’d bring in. I have to take some of the responsibility for not getting the word out. My mother got very sick, so the last thing on my mind was Unique Things. K and I did talk about what was going on, but I just wasn’t there to give her the push she needed to stay focused. Up until the time my mother got seriously sick, we had reached out to Valupak for mail-outs, scheduling a meeting with the representative for our area, but for one reason or another we could never get together. A Valupak, in case anyone doesn’t know what it is, is an envelope that comes in the mail full of discounts and business advertisements. They used to come every week, but it’s been some time since we’ve gotten the Valupak in my area.

What we were able to get out was business advertisement distribution through UPS. You pay based on the number of locations you chose to target. The target locations could be a mixture of houses and business, or just houses. You design your own postcard, or they can assist you. The price was in the $400 price range for the mixture of businesses and houses we chose. The bad thing about UPS mail-outs is you don’t know when they actually get sent, and there is no way to know how many customers visited Unique Things from the postcards. It was November, and the sales were trickling in, but we weren’t as focused as we should have been. K decided that not knowing how much visibility came from the postcards was to huge a problem,so she didn’t want to do that again. She decided to try Facebook ads, but the money for that was adding up from clicks and impressions. We just couldn’t afford it. I was no help my mom was getting sicker, and I had moved to her house to help my sister.

You just don’t realize how much impact your family life can have on starting a business. I realize now that family life has a great impact because it can take away your focus and drive. When things are wrong, you just don’t give the business 100 percent. A new business needs 100 percent of your attention to get off the ground. I just didn’t have it to give, and K was trying to keep the business afloat, while also being there for me. We had some surprise sales from Ebay and Groupon that came right on time. We were feeling depressed up until that time because it was Christmastime, and if you’re going to make sales, that is the time.

Glance Clock and all the features you will get

With all that was going on, K was still buying products, and came up with the idea to to see whether we could partner with a few of the Indiegogo and Kickstarter campaign owners. We created a form letter requesting to do business selling their products on our website. One response we received was for a product called the Glance Clock. The pictures I am showing are of the Glance Clock and all the features that you can have, just for connecting to your phone. The clock would be perfect for a small space, such as a den/office or small bedroom. I won’t say living room, unless it’s a space that covers your living room and dining room. The clock would then go nicely in the dining room part. I just want to be as upfront as possible with our products because we want satisfied customers, but more importantly, repeat customers. The Glance Clock and other unique products can be found on the Unique Things website.

Everything has calmed down family-wise, but I lost my mother during this holiday period. I’m still finding my way back to blogging, but more importantly, back to Unique Things. I hope you enjoyed this blog.

If you have any questions about my blog or any of our products, just email me at uniquethings116@gmail.com. If you enjoyed reading about how Unique Things got started, then give a read to my Retirementanddogs.blog to find out how my family got together. Be safe out there. Please look for my blog next week, as I continue to tell the story of the good and bad sides of starting A business with your spouse.

Side Hustle to Side Hustle

I know that I promised to talk about our second trip to the flea market, but I realized that I would have skipped over something that was important to K, not necessary to Unique Things or me. I blogged previously about two very different personalities entering into a business, also those two different people are married. I blogged about the importance of advertising and I’ll say it again: cut down on your products and spend the money advertising.

My spouse still had a hard time with the concept of less products more advertising. What she came up with was a side hustle to her already existing side hustle.

She wanted to sell Funko Pops. What are they? I can’t describe them, but you can see them in the pictures. I’m biased and see no value in these items, but she was again excited, not about Unique Things, but about selling these Funko Pops on the Unique Things website. Funko Pops on Unique Things was a big nope. Why? Because they are not unique to me. They all look the same; imitations of some character. I just described them, but for any more detail please refer to our website UniqueThingsonline.com. The fight begins. She gave me all of the reasons they should go on the Unique Things website, such as her collection, which had swelled to some 80 of these things was worth a lot of money. During my morning coffee, I heard again about the value of her Funko collection. I, in return, said, “Prove it sell some and let’s see if they sell for that much.” What I was trying to get her to understand was that, just because a Funko Pop Marketplace says, “Carson Wentz is worth $20″ doesn’t mean anything until you get a buyer who’s willing to pay that amount. Okay, this is where I talk about our second visit to the flea market.

We had everything packed and ready to go to the flea market, including Funko Pops. The weather was pretty good, and it was packed with vendors when we got there. We found a space, not paying attention to the vendors on either side of us. When we were about finished and I had a minute to checkout the vendors next us, I couldn’t believe it. There was a guy selling nothing but Funkos. I am thinking this is some kind of omen; not good. The second flea market experience was better because the weather was warm enough for outdoor traffic and the wind wasn’t blowing things all over the place. The people were friendly and helpful, which they were the first time too. You would not believe the first item to be sold was an autographed Herschel Walker Funko Pop. Herschel Walker had come to Fort Dix and he was nice enough to sign his Funko Pop for K. We did a lot better selling all of our items, and even though the guy next to us was selling Funko Pops, K was making a killing selling hers. I had to compromise on these Funko Pops, to be fair. When you go to our website, there is a category for those of you who are collectors of Funko Pops.

The setup and take down of all that is needed to sell in a flea market is just short of being an outdoor store for a day. It’s a pain, but once you’re there and people start coming over and buying, you forget all about the pain of setting up. The guy that was on the other side of us came very late and he sold birds, real birds. I found out he had a store, but on the weekends he shut down his store and came to the flea market. The flea market is a great place to sell. I’m not saying that every time you go out you will sell, but I will say it’s good for a weekend day when you have nothing to do and you want to take a chance on enlarging your customer base. We used flyers and business cards for people to take for future contact with us. The next blog will be after the flea market. Unique people, stay safe and blessed.
